As a mother of five kids – her eldest is 20
and her youngest is 2 – you wonder where Julie Jamaluddin finds the time to do
it all. Work, family, training for triathlons and managing the Singapore
Women’s Triathlon Club are just some of the many things she does.
The 42-year-old educator was very active
when she was younger – she was in the school team for athletics, cross-country
and netball. But adult life just got crazy busy and she didn’t have much time
to try new sports – until she found triathlons.
“I got into triathlons through my husband and his friends. You can’t be at the finish line without being inspired by their achievements from all the hard work that they’ve put in,” she said.
She registered for the Metasprint Triathlon
2017 but had to pull out because she was eight months pregnant by then. She did
it the year after and was so happy finally get to do it.
Her most memorable race is definitely her
first Ironman 70.3 in Davao this year. “It is an unbelievable feeling to get to
that finish line. You’ve just got to be there to understand it. I now know what
a finisher’s high is and why triathletes get race withdrawals.”
Currently preparing for the Ironman 70.3
Western Australia, Julie’s goal is to do the full Ironman one day. “I’m still
very new to triathlons and there’s still so many things to learn. You learn so
much about yourself from each run, ride and swim. I have a long way to go.”
She is also the leader of the Singapore
Women’s Triathlon Club, actively organising workshops, clinics and training for
women in the community. “Since finding like-minded women in triathlon I have
also really enjoyed the friendships that I have made. Listening to the stories
of their journey in the sport continually inspires me. I’d also love to see
more women doing triathlon races. It is such a positive community for our young
ladies!”
Before Julie found PURPOSE, she used to
wear a few odd pieces layered together for the swim, bike and run legs. But the
PURPOSE full-length trisuit has really changed the game for her.
“My favourite is definitely the PURPOSE
full-length trisuit. Since wearing them, I’ve been able to race more
comfortably and also improved performance. The suits are definitely more
aerodynamic for cycling and more streamlined in the swim. Transitions are a
breeze now and hence makes it easier to hit those PBs!
“I also love that it is a local brand!
PURPOSE understands the climate that Asian triathletes train and race in. In
addition, the suits not only look great but are of high quality and is cooling
in hot and humid races.”
